about

"Time", Kaoru's album of solo covers, was recorded during lockdown and released on Bandcamp Friday 2nd October. All sales will go equally to Gendered Intelligence and The Black Curriculum.

Kaoru talks about the origins and aims of of this project.

"During the lockdown period earlier this year, I recorded a set of covers, to keep the mental wolves from the mental door. These have now been properly mixed, sequenced and mastered to make up "Time", a collection of 8 songs (of hundreds) that were particularly impactful in my musical and personal development as a young person.

I pursued this project for several reasons. Firstly FOMO! Everyone was doing incredible covers and I wanted to play too! I also felt conscious that as someone coming to front a band for the first time quite late in her career my voice and vocal technique were lacking. I felt that acutely during the Dead Zoo's first few gigs before lockdown. I wanted to set myself vocal challenges with this project to explore and extend my range. Finally I wanted to limber up my production and recording techniques as The Dead Zoo had, by this point, decided to record our debut single "Mother" which I knew I would be self-producing.

I didn't have any intention to release these but as the process went on I began to think about finishing them properly to try and help those who might need help at this particularly difficult time. And so here we are. The video, I filmed at the same time as my segment for the “Mother” video (hence the same clothes!).

I do hope you will find it in your heart to support these causes through me at a horrifically difficult time for trans and black people, and black trans people in particular. I will make up any processing fees so all your donations go to the causes, and also match the first £50 of donations. I hope you will help out!"
